A Citizen is a member of a group. We are citizens of out classroom, our school, a city, coutntry and the world!

Elections and Voting

Election

An election is the process of voting for an elected official.

Election Day

Election Day is the day that citizens vote for a representative.  It might be a president, a governor or mayor, or other representatives.

Voting

Voting is each person making a choice for who they want to elect, and marking it on a ballot to be counted.

Ballot

A ballot is the place a person writes their choice for an election.  It might be a paper ballot or an electronic ballot.

Candidate

A candidate is a person who is wanting to be elected to an office.  

Holidays, Symbols and Patriotism

American Flag

Our flag is a symbol of America and our values.  A symbol means it represents something.  The American Flag has 13 stripes and 50 stars.  The stripes represent the original 13 colonies.  The 50 stars represent the 50 states.

Independence Day

Independence Day is also called the Fourth of July.  It is a day we celebrate the day our country became independent.  It is the day the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4th 1776.

National Anthem

The National Anthem is called The Star Spangled Banner.  The song represents freedom we have in our country, and love for our country.  It is about Americans being proud and brave.  It was written in 1812.

Pledge of Allegiance

The Pledge of Allegiance is recited in school, Congress and other places as a way to show respect for our the principles of our country.

Statue of Liberty

Liberty means the freedom to choose and make decisions about their own lives, while respecting the choices of others.  The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of freedom, inspiration, and hope.  Symbol means it represents something.  The Statue of Liberty was gifted to the United States on July 4th 1884.

Washington Monument

The Washington Monument was built to honor our first president George Washington.  It is in Washington D.C.  There are 50 flags around the monument that represent each state.

Liberty Bell

The Liberty Bell is a symbol of freedom.  It was made before the revolution!  It is in Pennsylvania.  It is made of metal and has a large crack in it.

Bald Eagle

The bald eagle is the national symbol.  It is a beautiful bird.  The bald eagle represents strength, freedom, and courage.
